Serena Advances; When Will Her Country?

Serena is amazing. And Abby Wambach and Megan Rapinoe, and Mo’ne Davis and Inbee Park and Maya Moore; do I need to go on? It’s fucking 2015, and in this country, we’re just coming around to the notion that women can do everything men can and often better? Yet we still collectively allow women to earn 75% of what men make? We relegate their athletic competitions (often better than on the men’s side) to ESPN3 or just straight to YouTube. It’s not okay, it’s not justified, it’s not rational and it needs to end now. Women’s equality in all matters is not a matter of a zealous liberal; it’s an imperative.

  1. I have written about this, too – not much different in Jamaica, in sports and other areas. Usain Bolt is our big hero (deservedly of course) but Shelly-Ann’s equally great achievements… “Oh yes, she’s great…” It’s just not the same. An imperative, indeed! thank you.
